Weatherproof composite cladding

Summit Cladding has often found itself cast in the role of Knight in Shining Armour, riding to the rescue of a householder who’s been let down by another builder, and this job in London E4 is another example.

Our client, Hari had a loft extension built a few years ago but soon noticed water leaking in through the side wall when it rained. Naturally, he went back to the builders for help.

Hari told us he got no support nor remedy from them and after two years of fruitless legal arguments he approached Summit for a solution.

Horror story in the wall!

Once we put the scaffolding up to investigate the problem the full horror of our client’s leaking wall was revealed. In just the short space of time that the extension had been in place, water had penetrated the render finish and rotted the timber supports around the window.

The first task, then, was to remove the pebble dash render for a closer inspection, which revealed further howlers. The wrong spec plywood had been used, as well as the cheapest quality insulation material.

Rip out and start again

The only solution was to cut out all the rotted timber beams and inferior plywood, along with the cheap fibreglass loft insulation in the side wall. In their place we installed new timber, 18mm plywood sheets and 25mm Kingspan foil back insulation. A new vapour barrier was also installed.

The finished touch was to fit James Hardie composite cladding in arctic white to the top half of the wall and around the window to replace the defective render, and to extend the roof tiles on the side verge for a fully weatherproof finish.

There have been some heavy downpours of rain since Summit Cladding completed the task, and our client Hari is happy to report that his home is now watertight!
