Pitched roof door canopy

The importance of first impressions when looking at the front of a house can never be over-stated. Does it have the wow factor or is there room for improvement? Summit Cladding’s latest task fell squarely into the second category.

The house, in Muswell Hill, North London, had two features that immediately drew the eye. The first was the chequerboard-style grey brickwork surrounding the front door. The second was the two exposed downpipes on either side of it, especially the large soil pipe connected to the bathroom and toilet.

Weatherproof and camouflage plan

The owner’s solution was to ask Summit to construct a large door canopy with two purposes in mind: first and foremost to provide a weatherproof front door area, but also to camouflage the pipework as far as possible.

As you can see from the “before” photograph, our client had already sketched a rough outline of where the canopy should be fixed, but at that stage he was unsure of what design and exact dimensions would best fill the space.

Bespoke maintenance-free canopy

Summit recommended and built a wide, bespoke canopy with a mini hip roof in three-dimensional design, topped by smooth grey tiles to match the brickwork around the front door, with maintenance-free pvc fascias and soffits.

The structure was supported by three robust brackets fixed to the wall with lead flashing cut into the top line to guarantee a watertight finish.

Finally, to complete the camouflaging effect, the smaller downpipe to the left of the front door was removed and reinstated further left at the end of the property and painted black. The larger soil pipe and connecting pipes on the right could not be moved, but by enclosing it inside the new canopy and matching the colours, we did our best to conceal it as far as possible.

The new canopy has made all the difference for our client. What used to be a rather drab and unlovely front wall is now an attractive and functional new look.
