The start of a new year can prompt many of us to think of renewal and improvement, or just doing something different — which is when Summit Cladding can offer some real choices. We were contacted by prospective clients, in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, who’d had a good hard look at the outside of their house and decided it was time for a makeover. The house was structurally sound, but the owners wanted our advice on how to improve its appearance and drainage efficiency using deep flow guttering. Building styles are just like all other passing trends that come in and out of fashion, and so it was with this property. The photographs taken before we undertook the work shows hanging tiles... Stunning transformation using Hardieplank cladding In this blog – how Summit Cladding transformed an ugly old garage into a smart new home office using hardieplank cladding. We were contacted by Karen and her husband who live in a 1930s semi-detached house in Greenwich, South London. They were renovating their property, but with space at a premium, they just couldn’t find the room for the home office they both wanted so much. The answer was outside the house! At the side of the property was a single garage built of white-painted concrete panels, standing on an unsightly brick plinth extending part way into the garden. And as Karen and her husband looked at the old building, containing all the odd bits... View Article

Replacing pebble dash Pebble dash – love it or loathe it? A lot of houses have been covered with this popular exterior finish over the past hundred years or more. But, in our experience, most of our clients want to get rid of it, as was the case with Tanya and her husband, based in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire. A large section of pebble dash on the front of their house had fallen away, leaving broken tiles and an ugly mess on the wall. Time for Summit Cladding to put things right! Colour choice They had seen examples of James Hardie Cladding on other buildings and decided that was what they wanted. I showed them samples of different colours and after discussing... View Article

Summit Cladding faced an unusual challenge with this project – how to combine two different house design styles that are 80 years apart! Our clients, Kevin and Cathy, live in a 1930s detached house in Theydon Bois, Essex. But their home has a new two-storey extension completed in 2017. And their design brief for us was to carry out an attractive makeover by bringing the two time zones into one. Builder’s recommendation Summit Cladding had recently completed another job for our clients’ builder just around the corner from their house and he recommended us, based on the high quality of our work. Kevin and Cathy loved the appearance of James Hardy Cladding but were unsure of what would be the... View Article

Previous posts on this blog have told the story of the dreaded Finlock concrete gutters – and here’s another! Our client, Jane, had some unwelcome news in the survey report from her mortgage lender on her end-of-terrace house in Epping. There was some urgent work required. First, part of the roof was leaking badly and second, the Finlock concrete gutters needed removing. These gutters, as we’ve reported before, can be a nightmare for home owners, with a risk of cracking and damp penetration in the walls. Search for specialist Jane had looked on the internet to find a company that specialises in removing concrete gutters, but all those she found were based in the Midlands. But then she discovered that not... View Article

I’m sure we are all hoping for a “barbecue summer” this year — and for these clients this will become a reality, with or without fine weather! Russel and Andrea from Loughton, Essex, realised their dream after their children grew up and built a brand new five-bedroom house on the site of their now demolished 1930s bungalow. With their Mediterranean heritage in mind, part of the brief for the architect was to create a purpose-built barbeque area for al fresco dining, in rain or shine. A touch of class This was where Summit Cladding were able to bring a touch of class to the design by recommending James Hardy cladding – or Hardieplank, as it’s often called. Russel and Andrea... James Hardie cladding Here was a challenge for Summit –- how to give a Victorian semi a major external makeover where space is tight. We were contacted by our clients, Terry and Jim, who live in Wood Green, North London. They were building a side extension to their house and looking at all the options that would give it the best look possible. Terry and Jim run a successful florist’s business with high standards, so they were precise about their requirements and expectations. A lot of the exterior rendering on their house was cracking and because of the height and awkward access to the property, they would be faced with a constant challenge to maintain the walls in good order.... Why choose James Hardie concrete cladding? We were first contacted by our customer, who lives in Studham, Bedfordshire to solve a problem he had with his cedar cladding. He bought the bungalow approximately five years ago, and virtually demolished it to create a modern, contemporary dwelling. The build was so impressive they had intended it to be shown on Grand Designs. Over time, the cladding had been affected by the weather and he wanted a material that was going to be maintenance free, but blend in with the forest setting. Our client visited our Crews Hill, Enfield showroom and then to a local installation of ours in the Ridgeway, to show him a concrete based board by James Hardie. James... View Article
